First, you will need to decide on a color scheme. Light green and pale pink is a great color combo for little girls, blues and greens for little boys, and for those special surprises, green and yellow work well. Of course, these are just suggestions - explore other options based on the color scheme of the baby shower decorations, the new nursery, or your own tastes.

You may also want to consider basing the cake around a popular show or character. The first one that comes to mind is the loveable Muppet Kermit. For a little girl, the Princess and the Frog would make for a completely adorable cake. There is also Frog from the kids' PBS series Word World, as well as Frog and Toad from the beloved childrens' books. Can you think of any more?

You should have no problem finding decorations for this style of cake. You can either wrap the cake layers in ribbon, or better yet, use receiving blankets to wrap up the tiers, making sure to tuck inside pacifiers, travel baby shampoo bottles, and other toiletries. A soft, plush froggy would look adorable perched on top. However, if you are making this for a little prince, you may want to do something a little different, topping it with a crown of gold paper.

There are so many different directions that you can take when putting together a frog diaper cake. It's a thoughtful present that is sure to be appreciated by the new parents.

Butterflies come in all shapes and sizes, and that's a good thing! To make one, use the mother's favorite colors, or match the diaper cake so that it coordinates with the nursery or with the color scheme of the baby shower.

Just as you can purchase silk flowers, you can purchase silk butterflies to use as embellishments on your diaper concoction. Check out your local craft stores. If the selection seems slim locally and you have enough time, do an online search. There are many online stores that sell them for a good price, and it's amazing how realistic they look! You may also want to check out scrapbooking stores for butterfly die cuts and stickers. If all else fails, you can even make your own using coffee filters and clothespins or tissue paper and pipe cleaners.

Other embellishments may include silk flowers, paper raffia, and die cut letters spelling out the baby's name. Don't forget to tuck a few toiletries and toys for the little one in the layers and tiers of the butterfly diaper cake.

To pick out your ribbon, take a walk through your local craft store.  Chances are you will be able to find a few different styles of wide width ribbon featuring ladybugs.  However, you can also surround the diaper tiers with checked or polka dotted ribbon in colors that match your theme.  If you have access to a Cricut die cut machine, you can easily make cute ladybug embellishments for your cake, using the Doodlecharms cartridge.  If you don't have a Cricut machine, you can also purchase die cuts separately from crafters on eBay and Etsy.

A stuffed ladybug toy is the perfect way to top off your diaper cake.  However, they can be difficult to find!  If you have trouble tracking one down, considering using an oversized silk flower, or make a big beautiful bow to put on top.  If you don't know how to make a bow, I highly recommend the Bowdabra - it makes the art of bow making super simple, even for people with two left thumbs (like me!).  Don't forget to put the finishing touches on your ladybug diaper cake - hide travel sized baby shampoos, powders, and other goodies, such as rattles and teething rings, inside the tiers of the cake.

When you think of farms, what do you think of first?  The animals, of course!  Cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, and ducks.  No matter the number of tiers, one of these cute little critters is the perfect way to top off this style of cake.  However, although a stuffed animal is the perfect topper, make sure it's baby friendly and does not pose any choking hazards.

What color are most barns?  Well, here in Indiana, red seems to be the predominant color, and I'm guessing it's popular elsewhere too!  Red is a great choice to use as the ribbon surrounding the cake.  You could also use bandanna print fabric or go for a cow print.  John Deere even has a line of nursery fabric that would be absolutely adorable for this purpose.

Don't forget to tuck in farm-themed prizes inside the cake layers.  Bibs (a "Got Milk? one would be perfect!), onesies, baby booties, and farm-themed rattles and toys are great ways to accessorize a barnyard diaper cake.

How do you make a tricycle diaper cake?  It's tough to find step by step instructions (I know - we need to get busy on a YouTube video for this one, don't we!), but it's actually not that much more difficult than making a standard tiered cake - you just have to be a little more creative and do a little reverse engineering!

Just as a trike has three wheels, you will need to make three tiers for this type of cake, with two small tiers for the back wheels, and a slightly larger tier for the front wheel.  You will need to attach all tiers to each other in a triangular shape using a strong piece of ribbon or material.  To make this step easier, you may want to consider building your tiers around an empty toilet paper roll - this will give you a hollow area through which you can thread the ribbon.

Once you have all the tiers attached, it's time to work on the handlebars.  A tightly rolled flannel receiving blanket is perfect for this.  Run the receiving blanket through the front wheel, using another ribbon to tie them together on top, and leaving enough room to tuck a bottle (which will become the headlight) between the wheel and the handlebars.

After tying the ribbon, finished the handlebars by shaping them toward the seat, and then cover the ends with baby booties or socks.  Add the final details by using a bib to cover the front wheel to form a fender, and use the second bib as the trike seat.

Well, this concludes our tricycle diaper cake instructions, but you can add other accessories too.  For example, place a stuffed animal on the seat - so cute!  You can also decorate the trike with rattles, teething rings, and other baby gifts.

First, if you don't mind paying shipping and handling charges, there are many places online that you can order one.  In addition to the different online stores, you may also want to check eBay and Etsy.

Although eBay is commonly considered a good place to buy garage sale goods, that is not the only thing you can find there.  Many crafters and artisans use it as a marketplace for their handmade creations.  In fact, on any given day, there are actually hundreds of different diaper cakes available for sale on this popular auction site.  With many of them offering a "Buy It Now" option, there's no need to hassle with the bidding process.

Would you like to know how to make a diaper cake?  You may be surprised at how simple these are to create.

Here are the ingredients for how to make a diaper cake with multiple tiers:

* A large pack of size 1 or size 2 diapers - It's better to have more diapers than you need than not enough.  You can always slip the extras in a gift bag and give them to the mother to be.

* Clear rubber bands - Small rubber bands are needed to wrap around the individual diapers, and larger rubber bands to wrap around the cake tiers.

* A base for the cake - This can be as simple as a piece of cardboard covered in coordinating baby wrap.  Plastic sandwich platters (for example, from Subway party platters), also work well for this purpose.  No matter what you use, make sure it is sturdy.

* A wooden dowel cut to the same size as the cake - This will hold the tiers togethers.  You will not need this item if you are wanting to keep things simple and make only a one tier cake.  You can also use baby bottles instead to hold the cake layers together.

* Wide ribbon - This is used to cover up the rubber bands and to decorate the outside of the tiers.

* Decorations for the cake - Just about anything you can find in the baby department at your local store will work here, including bibs, pacifiers, baby socks, and stuffed animals.  Confetti strips, die cut shapes, and artificial flowers are also good embellishments.

* Double-sided tape or other adhesive - This is used to secure the wide ribbon around the cake tiers.

Once you have all the ingredients, you are ready to start baking (or should I say making!) your concoctions.  Following are the step by step instructions:

Step One:

Roll up each diaper individually and secure with a rubber band.  Most disposable nappies have a pattern at the top of the diaper.  To keep this from showing, start rolling from the pattern end, finishing with the white on the outside.

Step Two:

Once all diapers are rolled, you are ready to start building the cake tiers.  Place the dowel in the middle of a diaper roll, and place on the cake platter.  Place a large rubber band around this center roll, and add additional diaper rolls, forming a circle around the center diaper.  If the cake is a two tier cake, add one more rubber band and an additional layer of diapers.  Repeat this process once more for a three tier cake.

Step Three:

Repeat step two for the remaining tiers.  Each tier up will have one less layer, until the final tier is reached, which consists of a middle diaper and one layer of surrounding diapers.

Step Four:

Using double sided tape, adhere the wide ribbon to each cake layer.

Step Five:

Decorate the cake by adding the embellishments.  To keep them in place, tuck them into the diaper folds or beneath the ribbon.  Don't forget to add a bouquet of flowers or a stuffed animal, as the focal point at the top of the cake.

In this, our third and final installment in the series, we are providing a video showing you the process of building a cake.  After the video, we discuss some variations, because no two diaper cakes are the same!

Here's our favorite video showing how to make a diaper cake.  Thanks to Nisha at Creative Baby Shower Ideas for sharing this video.

Now, let's discuss variations.  You may have noticed that Nisha did not make her cake exactly as we described in our previous instructions.  Most noticeably, instead of using a dowel, she used baby bottles to secure the center of her cake and to build the tiers.

This is just one of many variations.  Some people have a difficult time tracking down clear colored rubbered bands.  If all you can find are the colored ones, go ahead and use them.  After building the final layer around tiers, you can remove the rubber bands, tying around a thin coordinating ribbon around each diaper as you do, to secure it.

If removing and replacing rubber bands sounds like too much trouble, keep the rubber bands in place.  To hide them, wrap a receiving blanket around each cake layer, and then add your wide ribbon to secure the blanket.  This way the rubber bands are hidden by the blanket.

Some people also use itty bitty pieces of tape instead of rubber bands.  If you do this, just make sure the diaper can still be used once the cake is dismantled.

You can also make them without even rolling up the diapers.  We found a wonderful video tutorial on another website showing how to make a diaper cake using flat diapers instead of rolled ones.
